Melanin

Melanin: The pigment that gives human skin, hair, and eyes their color. Dark-skinned people have more melanin in their skin than light-skinned people have. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes. It provides some protection against skin damage from the sun, and the melanocytes increase their production of melanin in response to sun exposure. Freckles, which occur in people of all races, are small, concentrated areas of increased melanin production.

The difference in the color of the skin [called melanin] sometimes presents a different issue when it comes to regular skincare. Many dermatologist aren’t properly trained on darker skin tones. This makes it so much harder to properly diagnose and treat certain skin problems. The knowledge that black dermatologists have particularly for darker skin shades is inequivalent to any other in the industry. Visiting a dermatologist sounds both intimating and expensive, but lets put your mind to ease.
First, does your health insurance cover your derm’ appointments? Conditions such as eczema, keloid scars, psoriasis, and severe acne, just to name a few, are usually covered by insurance benefits. Still, however, you must make sure to discuss all of your treatment options with your insurance provider.
